Raw Material: Copper- the principal element in brass and bronze was smelted from ores in prehistoric times and forged into crude everyday objects, tools and weapons. Copper was then alloyed with zinc during a later period. The discovery of Tombak or red brass with a lower zinc content and brass with a zinc content of up to 50% proved to be a more durable base material for the manufacture. Brass, very tough and malleable can be highly polished, coloured and galvanically coated with other metals such as chromium, nickel, silver and gold. On account of its resistance to atmospheric and mineral effects, items of equipment, valves and technical parts made from brass have found a wide field of application which will not easily be substituted by other materials in the future. |
